American Garden Streets are the tree-lined streets with single-family houses prevalent in the streetcar-era garden suburbs and many recent Traditional Neighborhood Developments. These are usually two-way streets. Planting strips with shade trees separates the sidewalk from the automobile space on each side. Low garden walls, picket fences, and hedges can define the boundaries of the public right-of-way. Front yards and porches form an intermediate space between the private houses and the public street.
