Living Streets (Dutch “woonerfs” or “woonerven”) have a maximum speed of four miles per hour (walking speed). The speed limit applies to cyclists as well as cars. Living Streets are narrow, usually curbless shared spaces where children can safely play.

Pedestrian Malls are car-free entertainment and main streets. Briefly fashionable in the 1960s, but then discredited as a failed experiment, they are now making a comeback. “Ped malls” require careful consideration
