Pedestrian Streets and Passages

Example 2: Midblock Arcade

See Westminster Arcade, Providence or Burlington Arcade, London

Passages are generally narrow, car-free streets in the middle of a block. They introduce routes for pedestrians that cut the length of long blocks.

Midblock Arcades are formal passages, often roofed and/or encased within buildings, that showcase storefront businesses by concentrating foot traffic.

Pedestrian Passages and Paseos lend themselves to leisurely walks and may be paired with parallel boulevards or avenues to offer an intimate alternative to those busier, wider streets.
