Step Street

Pedestrian Streets and Passages

Example 4: Step Street

See The Vennel, Edinburgh or Ninety-Nine Steps, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Step Streets give pedestrians direct routes up and down slopes or hills that are too steep for a straight street. When topography requires that roads going up the hill must wind back and forth or that access roads are far apart, step streets provide convenient access for pedestrians.

Green Streets have no paved roadways and are closed to cars. Houses face the street as in the American Garden Street, but the space between the sidewalks has gardens and parkland. All cars are in the alleys behind the houses, or on the cross streets.
