Slow Streets

Example 1: Yield Street

See Twain Avenue, Davidson or Balfour Place, London

Slow Streets control driving speeds by giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

Yield Streets or “give-way” streets allow slow traffic on narrow streets. Only one car can go through at a time, forcing the car traveling in the opposite direction to “yield.”

A Bicycle Street (Dutch “fietsstraat”) gives bicycles priority over cars and trucks. In the Dutch version, signs say “Auto te gast” (“Your car is a guest”). The carriageway is divided into three narrow lanes instead of two. The middle lane has a rough texture that tells drivers to go slowly.
